Simply The Best

Heart attacks are 20% higher on Mondays than on any other day of the week. I don't know what this says about optimism, but it sure doesn't make me want to be pessimistic.

A typical test of optimism is, is the glass half full or half empty? This simple change in perspective labels you an optimist or pessimist. These observations are opinions of the present situation but project nothing about our confidence in the future.

Optimism is not a change in the way we look at things. Instead, it is a belief that the best exists in any situation, no matter how big the challenge or how grime the circumstances.  It stems from the Latin word Optim meaning "The Best."

Optimism is expecting the best, looking for the best, and seeing the best in every situation. However, that doesn't mean it is a blind positivity that is oblivious to reality. Instead, it acknowledges that "The Best" varies by situation.

"The Best" could be...The loss of a job that led to a career, or chemotherapy prolonging the life of a loved one long enough for you to say, "I Love You." one more time, or the loss of a pregnancy that leads you to adopt a child and change a life forever.

Time and time again, we see how stress, tragedy, and dire situations strengthen people, organizations, and the world to do extraordinary things. Yet, in some cases, "The Best" is not that obvious or appealing. It might only be getting up, taking another step, or simply breathing.

"The Best" is always there, sometimes hidden by pain, struggle, and suffering. But, "The Best" is there at work regardless of whether we choose to see it. It opens doors, blazes new trails, creates new understanding, and leads to better things.

Given enough time, "The Best" reveals itself to every realist or pessimist. The optimist decides to look for it in every situation.

Be the Optimist.  Believe in "The Best".

More Inspirational Optimism

My optimism grew from significant losses in my life. The beatification of Father Solonas Casey in 2017 and his stories inspired me to be thankful ahead and see that God is blessed in all his designs.
